A. J. James was born March 2, 1942 in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma to Abram and Georgia James. He was the 12th of 13 children.

A.J. attended King Rosenwall School and graduated from Tuskahoma High School. He was a member of Church of God in Christ in Tuskahoma. He moved to Oklahoma City, met and married Anna Randall.

A.J. is preceded in death by his father, Abram James, his mother, Georgia James, his wife Anna Elizabeth James. Son: Howard Douglass. Brothers: Houston James, Clarence James, L.C. James, Dewey James. Sisters: Elizabeth Livingston, Loweta Williams, Faye James, Elsie James.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter, Roxanne Roland of Kansas City, Missouri; his son, Ray Anthony Douglass Sr. (Cynthia) of Oklahoma City; his daughter, Felecia Osborne of Del City; his grandchildren, Raenita Douglass, Cortilliaus Plunkett Sr., Ray Anthony Douglass Jr., his great grandson, Cortilliaus Plunkett Jr.; his brother, Henry Gleason of Oklahoma City; his sisters, Minnie C. Moore of Oklahoma City and Sally Tuggle of Spencer, Oklahoma; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
